Lake Karapiro
Escape to the calming waters of Lake Karapiro, surrounded by bush and luscious green hills. Whether you’re taking part in one of the many sporting events (see What’s On) or simply having a picnic beside the water, it has great facilities including toilets, children’s play parks and picnic areas.
The man-made lake was formed behind the Karapiro hydro dam in 1947 and today it provides eight square kilometres of calm water beside 19 hectares of land known as the Mighty River Domain.
You can sail, kayak and swim here, and if you like fishing, brown and rainbow trout thrive here too.
